The Importance of a Teddy Bear
🌿 The Importance of a Teddy Bear
By Charley — Mum to 5 living children and 4 baby angels
A teddy bear might look small to most people. But to a baby loss parent, it can hold a whole world of love.
My name is Charley. I am a mum to five beautiful children here with me, and four precious baby angels — Timothy, Buttons, Wynter, and Baby. Each one has shaped my heart. Each one has changed my life. Each one has taught me how deep a mother’s love can go.
When I lost my son Timothy, everything stopped. I was in a coma. I never got to be the first person to hold him. It felt like I had to say goodbye before I ever got to say hello.
When I woke up, my arms felt empty. My heart felt confused.I wanted him to feel my touch, to hear my voice, and for me to hear his tiny cry.The “firsts” of everything were taken from me, and that pain is hard to explain.
And then came the bear.
Timothy’s ashes rest safely next to his teddy bear.
The bear sits beside him like a gentle guardian.
It is the closest thing I have to holding him.
This teddy bear became my bridge — the thing that helped me feel like a mum again. When I hold it, I feel a little closer to Timothy. When I sit with it, I feel a little less lost. When I hug it, I feel a tiny piece of peace.
A teddy bear can bring:
Bonding — a way to feel connected when your arms ache for your baby.
Comfort — something soft to hold when grief feels sharp.
Heart hugs — a gentle reminder that love continues.
Presence — a companion for the quiet moments when memories are all you have.
My bear sits with me when I cry.
It sits with me when I smile.
It sits with me when I talk to Timothy in my heart.
It is not “just a bear.”
It is part of my son’s space in the world.
We needed a way to tell our living children about their special brother born into Heaven. This bear is brought down from his shelf anytime I need a hug or I’m feeling out of sorts. My children have full access to Timothy Bear whenever they want a cuddle or want to speak to him.
When we were blessed with our rainbow, Isabella, this bear became so important to her that we had one made just for her. She was born 18 months after Timothy died, so she has no memories of him — but the bear became her way of knowing her brother. She took it everywhere. We are now trying to make one for each of the other children, so they always have their brother with them in a way they can hold.
Losing four babies has shaped my life in ways I never expected. It is why I completed my Level 3 Counselling and Bereavement Support, so I can help other parents in the baby loss community. It is why I volunteer. It is why I speak openly. It is why I share my story — because no parent should feel alone in this kind of pain.
If you have a teddy bear in memory of your baby, you will understand. If you don’t, you might one day find that a bear becomes the thing that helps you breathe again.
A teddy bear cannot replace a child. But it can hold the love that never fades. And sometimes, that is enough to carry you through the day.
🌼 A Short Poem from Mum to Timothy
By Charley
My sweet Timothy,
your ashes rest beside your little bear,
and together they hold the space
where my love for you lives.
I cannot hold you in my arms,
but I hold you in every heartbeat.
In every quiet moment,
I feel you near.
You are my forever.
You are my always.
